The Gambian Premier League Soccer team, Samger, has announced its withdrawal from this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup competition, making it the second Gambian team to withdraw from a CAF competition this year.
The disclosure was made here Friday by the president of the Gambia Football Association, Seedy Kinteh in an interview with APA.
The GFA boss said Samger withdrew from the CAF competition because it (Samger) unable to meet its financial obligations.
Kinteh added that the Gambia Football Association (GFA) used to assist Gambian clubs to participate in continental competitions, but the GFA were no longer doing that because it is not their responsibility to do so.
He also pointed out that the clubs used to give ten percent of the proceeds they generated from the sale of players to the GFA, adding that now that the clause which made it mandatory for the clubs to give part of their proceeds to the FA is amended in the GFA rules, the GFA also decided to withdraw the support it used to give to the premier league teams.
This latest development means that no Gambian club will participate in any of the continental competitions this year as the other club, Wallidan has also earlier withdrawn from the African Champions League qualifying rounds.
